But what does it mean?
A flag is a symbol. It represents what a country stands for. And its meaning evolves as the country's identity evolves. So if right now, the country's identity is too tied up in its own darkness, maybe a temporary symbol can take its place - to encompass a new direction, a new identity. A new flag for a New America.
Black & white to pay homage to the social justice efforts of the past & present, in the shape of a heart for Love as a call to action, and one star for coming together as one people - not to take away from our individuality or to deny current issues, but to acknowledge our interconnectedness and the truth that none of us are free until all of us are free.
Our collective shadow is visible now. And we get to choose what to do with it. We can fuel it with more divisive, hateful rhetoric, or we can focus our energy on building something New. Something beautiful. Something born out of love, peace, kindness, compassion, empathy, respect. And these qualities can't exist outside (in our communities, countries, world) if we don't cultivate them inside (ourselves and our relationships).
So the question for each of us becomes "where do I start and how can I practice it daily?"
